Lubricants

A better gear-oil enquiry starts with the specified grade.

Use Omega 690 as an example of why a product number, a grade and an equipment requirement all belong in the same enquiry.

Start with the equipment requirement

If you are sourcing a lubricant for a particular piece of equipment, begin with its stated lubricant requirement. Record the equipment identity and the grade or specification you have been asked to source, using the wording in the equipment documentation or purchasing requirement.

That information makes the enquiry specific. A broad request for “gear oil” leaves the product, grade, application and quantity open. A clear request names what is known and marks anything that still needs checking.

A product family can list several grades

The reviewed Omega 690 packet names the product “Super EP Gear Oil” and lists seven grades: SAE 90, SAE 140, SAE 80W90, SAE 85W140, SAE 75W90, SAE 75W140 and ISO VG 460. These entries are reproduced as a list from that source, not as a recommendation of a grade for an application.

Keep the exact grade alongside the product number in your request. If you do not know the grade, state that explicitly and include the equipment requirement you need checked. Do not let a search result, container image or product-family title silently fill in that missing detail.

A viscosity classification is only part of the description

SAE International’s published scope for J306 describes a viscosity classification for automotive driveline lubricants and states that other lubricant characteristics are not considered. This is a useful reminder that a viscosity label does not answer every question about a lubricant.

A source may separately discuss applications, test data and other characteristics. Keep those categories distinct when comparing documents. A grade list alone does not establish compatibility, approval, an equivalent product or suitability for a specific machine.

Put the useful details in one message

  • Product: the brand and complete product number, if already selected.
  • Grade: copy the exact grade or mark it as “to be confirmed”.
  • Equipment: identify the machine or system and the relevant requirement.
  • Quantity: state the amount or number of packs required, with the pack size if known.
  • Documents: ask for the current technical sheet and matching safety sheet where needed.

The Omega 690 packet available here has technical pages revised on 20 October 2022. Confirm the current manufacturer revision and the exact product/grade being offered. No application, blending, substitution or product-handling instructions are provided in this guide.
